Rite Aid Point of Sale & Web Accessibility

GDBBD partner Linda M. Dardarian and co-counsel Lainey Feingold negotiated settlement agreements with Rite Aid requiring Rite Aid to make its website accessible to customers with visual impairments and to install tactile point of sale machines.  The agreements were achieved using Structured Negotiations on behalf of the American Council of the Blind (ACB), the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), and the California Council of the Blind (CCB).  In the web agreement, Rite Aid committed to comply with priorities 1 and 2 the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 1.0, promulgated by the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) of the World Wide Web Consortium.  The agreement specifically states that if there is a visual "Captcha" on the Rite Aid website, there will also be an alternative security measure that is equally effective and usable by blind and visually-impaired users.  The POS agreement ensures that devices in over 5,000 Rite Aid stores have tactile keypads so that customers with visual impairments can independently enter their PINs and other confidential information on the keypads.
